In two separate incidents,the Maoists today shot dead two CPM leaders in Purulia. Significantly,both the incidents took place at the same time but in different places.
According to a senior police officer of the Balarampur police station,Sitanath Singh Sardar (53),secretary of the Darga local committee of the CPM,was attacked when he was returning home from the Balarampur market at 6.30 pm today. Two Maoists – who were on a bike – fired indiscriminately at him and fled from the spot. Sitanath,a resident of Rucha village,was rushed to the Balarampur hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. Sources said that policemen and jawans of the NIRB camping in the community hall located at the market did not come to the spot even after being informed about the incident.
In another incident,two Maoists riding on a bike shot Judhisthir Mondal (50),vice-president of Balarampur Panchayat Samity at 6.15 pm when he was sitting with some of his party members at a tea-stall in Balarampur. He was taken to a hospital in Jamshedpur in a critical condition,where he succumbed to injuries. Judhisthir,a resident of Khekridihi village,used to reside in Balarampur due to threat from Maoists.
Rajesh Yadav,Superintendent of Police,Purulia,said: Two persons were shot dead by the Maoists today in Balarampur. We have sent our forces to the spot.
