Man lynched on mobile theft suspicion in West Bengal’s Jhargram: Police

The incident took place on June 22 and a case was registered, probe is on to find out what led to his death, says police

A 23-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by local residents and another person was seriously injured in Jhargram after they were suspected of mobile phone theft, police said on Sunday.

Sources identified the deceased as Sourav Sau, a resident of Benageria area of Jhargram. His friend, Akshay Mahato, is under treatment at a hospital. According to hospital sources, his condition is critical.

Sau’s family has demanded stringent punishment for the culprits. According to the family of the deceased, on May 22, Sau had gone along with a friend in Khatkhura area under Jamboni police station.

Later, they were returning home on a two-wheeler along the road of Khatkhura area in the afternoon.

A few people attacked them suddenly, suspecting them to be thieves. Sau and his friend were severely beaten up.

“The incident took place on June 22 and a case was registered. Investigation is on to find out what led to his death,” said a senior police officer.

This comes after a 47-year-old man suspected of having stolen a mobile phone was beaten to death allegedly by a mob at the Udayan Government Hostel in Bowbazaar, Kolkata.

Around 15 suspects were detained after the incident, police said.

Also, a 22-year-old man was beaten to death by some neighbours in Mahish Bathan area, on the fringes of Salt Lake, over suspicion that he had stolen a phone.
