Hours after a 31-year-old man was found hanging in Subhashgram area of South 24 Parganas district, his family alleged that he “died by suicide over panic due to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA),” police said on Thursday.

Police said the deceased, Debashish Sengupta, was a resident of Netaji Nagar area of Kolkata. He went to his maternal grandparents’ house in South 24 Parganas district two days ago, they added. “On Wednesday night, his family found him hanging and took him to a hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival,” police said.

Debashish’s father Tapan Sengupta alleged, “My son was worried about how he would prove his citizenship after CAA was implemented. He often asked what he would do if his citizenship was revoked.”
