A day after nine people were killed in a blast at an illegal firecracker factory in Purba Medinipur district’s Egra town, Leader of Opposition in Assembly Suvendu Adhikari Wednesday visited the site of the explosion and demanded the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as the home minister of the state.

Adhikari also informed that his lawyer has moved the Calcutta High Court today to seek a probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the incident.

Adhikari said, “From Bogtui to Khagragarh, there have been several incidentof violence in the state. The chief minister who is also the home minister of the state is responsible for this. Mamata Banerjee has failed in her position as a home minister and she should step down from her position. She has lost her right to remain in her post.”

Adhikari also said that his party would organise a protest rally in Egra over the next few days to press for their two demands.

“Firstly, we want an NIA probe in the incident. My lawyer has already moved Calcutta High in this regard. Secondly, we want the chief minister to resign as home minister of West Bengal. I have given a call for a mega rally in Egra in the coming days. Over 25,000 BJP workers will participate in the protest,” said Adhikari.

The BJP MLA from Nandigram alleged that the illegal firecracker factory was set up to supply bombs to Trinamool Congress to be used in upcoming state panchayat polls.

“The state police helped the factory remain functional. The local police was hand in glove in this so that the TMC benefits from it. We want to expose the state government and the ruling party as well,” he added. Adhikari also said the administration should provide Rs 10 lakh to families of each of the victims.

Meanwhile, Adhikari moved the division bench of Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court TS Sivagnanam with his plea for a NIA probe. The court has accepted the PIL and the matter is likely to be heard later this week.

TMC state general secretary Kunal Ghosh said the state government has already initiated a CID probe. “Suvendu Adhikari is named in a CBI FIR who has sought refuge with the BJP to evade a CBI investigation. “
