Mamata plans meet to talk split

Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee does not let grass grow under her feet.

Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee does not let grass grow under her feet. A day after declaring that she would consider going it alone if the Centre did not take immediate action to contain violence in the state, she has planned a core committee meeting on Monday, where the alliance will be discussed.

The meeting also assumes significance in view of the death of Swapan Kole, the SFI student of Jagabandhu College,Howrah, last Thursday in the hands of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad supporters.

Trinamool sources said Mamata wants to hold talks with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi before taking any final decision on the alliance.

While addressing a media conference on Saturday,Mamata had not concealed her dissatisfaction over the fact that the Congress has made no effort to contain the ongoing political violence in Bengal despite several nudges from Trinamool. “Total military rule is going on in Bengal,” she had said. “I had called up Pranab Mukherjee to ask whether this is going on with the support of the Central government.”

A core committee member said: “We are not happy with the Congress — be it at the Centre or the state. Our leaders are being openly targetted by state Congress leaders like Adhir Choudhury and Manas Bhuniya. We will discuss our stand in the meeting. But any talks regarding alliance or seat sharing will first be held between Mamata Banerjee and Sonia Gandhi.”

Apart from guiding party workers regarding the path they should follow for the 2011 Assembly elections in case the alliance does not work out,Mamata will also talk to the district and block level workers on how to face the CPM on the death of Swapan Kole, student of Jagatbandhu college, who was allegedly lynched.

Mamata will also chalk out plans to attack the CPM over multiple issues — Lalgarh,Rajarhat, campus violence and “state sponsored terrorism”.
