A Jadavpur University professor today fell onto the railway tracks of the Jadavpur station and lost one of his legs.

Gopinath Bhandari (44),associate professor in the civil engineering department, was knocked down by a train at around 10.15 am while crossing the tracks. The professor was on his way to the university when he slipped onto the tracks in front of an oncoming train.

Secretary of Jadavpur University Teacher’s Association,Prof Partha Pratim Biswas, said,“Doctors have performed a surgery on him and they may have to carry out some shock tests after 24 hours. He is under observation now. We are told there are some difficulties in his case.”

A resident of Dhakuria,Bhandari lay near the track for almost half an hour, bleeding profusely, with his severed leg lying on the opposite end of the tracks even as nobody came for help.

At around 10.45,a non-teaching staff of the university saw him lying unconscious, and called the university authorities. The professors and students reached the spot around 11. They took Bhandari to a private medical college from where he was shifted to a private super specialty hospital in Mukundapur.
