West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday targeted the Opposition, saying it was “better to ignore” some who were doing “drama” while her nephew and TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee said action would be taken against those found guilty of violence during the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) polls.
After casting her vote at Mitra Institution in ward no 73, Mamata, accompanied by her sister-in-law and TMC candidate Kajori Banerjee, said people cast their vote in a “festive mood”.
On allegations of violence, she said, “Some who cannot contest the election are doing drama. Let them do so. This is democracy. Better you ignore them.” She congratulated police for “trying their best”.
Her nephew, Abhishek, however, struck a different note.
“Any person, irrespective of their political affiliation, who disturbs the voting process will be put behind bars. If it’s proven that any Trinamool Congress worker is involved in the incidents of violence, stern actions will be taken against them within 24 hours,” he said after casting vote.
He said, “The All India Trinamool Congress does not support violence of any form. We want the election process to be free-and-fair. If there is any problem anywhere, I request my media friends to make the footage public and share it with the authorities.”
All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) tweeted, “People in Bengal are celebrating the festival of Democracy with pride! Our Chairperson @MamataOfficial has always ensured free & fair elections across the state and we will continue to protect Democracy and uphold the values & principles of this nation.” Secretary General of TMC Partha Chatterjee said the election was fair and minister Firhad Hakim mocked allegations of opposition.
