Police claimed the accused told investigators that they were using Bubble as a couple and had connected with Adarsh there. (File Photo)A day after Chartered Accountant Adarsh Losalka was murdered in a hotel in Kasba, police said he had met accused Kamal Saha and Dhruvo Mitra on a dating app a day before his death.
On Monday, Joint Commissioner of Police Rupesh Kumar said at a press conference, “On November 22 afternoon, a male body was found and Kasba police visited the hotel. During investigation, it was found that the victim, Adarsh Losalka, had checked into the hotel on November 21 at 9:30 pm. All three people had checked in together and ordered food on a delivery app. Late at night, around 2 am, Dhruvo and Kamal checked out. In the morning, when Adarsh did not check out, hotel staff checked the room and found his body. There was an injury and blood under the nose.”
Police said there were bruise marks on the body and the nose was fractured. “The room condition, the bed, the food and things in the room showed that there was a clash inside the room,” said Joint CP Rupesh Kumar.
During interrogation, Dhruvo and Kamal allegedly told police that they were in a live-in relationship and stayed in a rented apartment in Dum Dum. “According to the accused, there was a party in Adarsh’s room and during the party there was a clash. He fell on the floor during the scuffle and became unconscious. The two accused panicked and left the room. They took the victim’s ATM card, cash from his wallet and the two mobile phones,” Kumar said.
He added that while tracking the accused, police found that after leaving the hotel, the two allegedly booked a Rapido to Ultadanga, allegedly withdrew Rs 11,000 from an ATM using Adarsh’s card, and then allegedly travelled around in a local train.
Police claimed the accused told investigators that they were using Bubble as a couple and had connected with Adarsh there. Police have recovered both of Adarsh’s phones and seized the accused persons’ phones. “All the apps have been deleted. The phones will be sent for forensics. The motive and why the clash happened is still under investigation. Only after the forensic examination will we know the exact conversations,” Kumar said. Police are also trying to determine how long the accused and Adarsh had been in touch on the app.
According to police, the accused have known each other since Class 11, as they studied in the same school in Barrackpore. Their families also know each other, police sources said.
On Sunday afternoon, police arrested Dhruvo and Kama — both in their 20s — after Losalka’s body was found in a Kasba hotel room on Saturday. CCTV footage allegedly showed the two entering his room on Friday and leaving after five and a half hours, at 2:30 am.
Sources said Losalka, who lived in a rented flat in Kolkata with friends, had allegedly booked two rooms in the hotel. He checked into one at 8.30 pm on Friday. Dhruvo and Kamal were allegedly seen checking into another room booked by Losalka. Later, at around 9 pm, they were allegedly seen entering his room.
“During questioning, she said there was an argument with Adarsh that led to a scuffle in which he fell on the floor. They then tied his legs and ran away,” a police officer said. The post-mortem report has concluded that Losalka died of strangulation. “The death was due to the effects of mechanical asphyxia resulting from strangulation, antemortem and homicidal in nature,” the report stated.
Since the body was found naked, with his legs tied with a towel and a deep gash on the back of his head, police suspect he was hit from behind and then strangled. Condoms were recovered from the crime spot. Police said all his social media accounts, including WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram, were deactivated after the murder.
