JU molestation case: 2 students in judicial remand till Sept 29

Senior police official investigating the case said they have prima facie evidence against the two students.

Two students of Jadavpur University’s engineering faculty, arrested Friday in connection with the August 28 molestation case on the campus, were produced before court and sent to judicial remand till September 29. Senior police official investigating the case said they have prima facie evidence against the two students.

According to sources, the victim who was allegedly dragged to a boys’ hostel on the campus and molested,  gave a statement before the magistrate. Later, on the basis of her description, the Kolkata Police made a sketch of the accused that matched with one of the arrested students.

The arrests came after the committee formed by the government to look into the case submitted its report to state education minister Partha Chatterjee. The committee was headed by Calcutta University V-C Suranjan Das.

The protests demanding resignation of JU V-C Abhijit Chakrabarti continued on the campus with the students still refusing to return to classes.
“We are holding a meeting to decide on the future course of action. Our agitation will continue. We are not convinced with the arrests made on FRiday. Did the victim identify them? Why has police become so efficient suddenly,” said Ayan Banerjee, a student leader of JU.
