Stepping up his attack against the Bharatiya Janata Party, Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee said on Thursday that the ruling party at the Centre is using funds meant for West Bengal for the Central Vista project, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s publicity campaign and for buying airplanes for him.

Addressing a gathering in Alipurduar district on the third day of ‘Jana Sanjog Yatra’, the TMC’s mass outreach campaign ahead of the panchayat elections in the state, Banerjee said, “In the name of the double-engine government, the BJP is looting people’s money. Of that looted money, an airplane worth Rs 8,000 crore was bought for PM Modi, Rs 5,000 crore was used on his publicity drive and Rs 20,000 crore is being spent on the Central Vista project. For all this, Bengal’s money is withheld. In fact, Bengal’s money is being diverged to Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.”

Citing increasing prices of cooking gas, petrol and diesel and holding the Centre responsible for rising inflation, the TMC’s virtually number 2 leader, who addressed three public meetings in Kumargram, Alipurduar-I and Kalchini blocks of Alipurduar district, accused the BJP of failing to usher in growth and prosperity in the country.

He hit at the party for its alleged failure to deliver on the promises it made to people.

Speaking about the importance of people’s participation in the democratic process, he said, “Only those whom people prefer will be candidates for the upcoming polls. At the end of this meeting, you will be given ballot papers, where you can write down your preference of candidates for the post of zila parishad, panchayat samiti heads and gram panchayat heads.”

Highlighting the importance of secret ballots, the TMC leader assured people that their votes would remain confidential. “Be fearless while voting since no one will know who you have voted for,” he added. Banerjee slammed the Opposition leaders for their “smear campaign” against the initiative. “Many are saying that this exercise is sham. I will be in the field for 60 days. Can they be in the field for even six days?” he asked.

“Of the 5 Assembly seats in Alipurduar in 2021, the BJP won all. You thought development would come to your region and that it would get statehood. But now you realize as how the BJP only made empty promises,” he further said.
