The participants at the silent rally taken out by intellectuals in the city today to commemorate the second anniversary of the police firing in Nandigram two years ago that killed 14 people was verbally attacked by DYFI activists, who were also taking out a rally from Metro Channel at the same time.

The intellectuals’ rally, which started from the Metro Channel at 4 pm and finished at College Square, had personalities like Suvaprasanna,Mahasweta Devi,Shaoli Mitra,Bibhas Chakrabarty and Ananya Chatterjee Chakrabarty participating in it. The DYFI supporters targeted Partha Chatterjee and Sudip Bandopadhyay, who were also a part of the intellectuals’ rally. However, there were no other more disturbances.

Theatre personality Bibhas Chakrabarty, one of the participants, said that March 14 had become a part of history. “There are some days we do not forget, like February 21 which we celebrate as Bhasha Diwas now. March 14 too has become the day that signifies the atrocities of the Left Front government. It has now become the day when genocide was committed. The government says it is a dead issue, but we believe it is an issue of the dead,” said Chakrabarty.

He also said they had been asked by the police to call off their rally at the last moment or organise it another day as the DYFI was taking out another rally from the same place. “But,we did not choose the day. It was the government who committed those atrocities on March 14 and we have to protest against them on the same day,” said Chakrabarty. He said the day would be commemorated every year as a mark of respect to the people who died two years ago. Artist Suvaprasanna said the fight against state terrorism would continue in all its forms.

Meanwhile, the rally completely paralysed traffic in the Esplanade area since 4 pm. All the other major roads, from Wellington to College Street, had been blocked off due to the rally.
