On the court’s order, Faizan’s body was exhumed from a graveyard in Assam where he was buried six months ago. (Express Photo) After receiving a forensic report, the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday directed West Bengal Police to include murder charge under section 302 (murder) of the IPC in its FIR into the death of IIT-Kharagpur student Faizan Ahmed.
Faizan, a third-year mechanical engineering student from Tinsukia in Assam, was found dead in his hostel room at IIT-Kharagpur in Paschim Medinipur district on October 14, 2022.
Police had earlier said that Faizan died by suicide. Faizan’s mother had moved the High Court, seeking the formation of an SIT to probe her son’s death.
Directing police to include the murder charge, the single bench of Justice Rajasekhar Mantha on Tuesday said the time has come to identify the accused.
The court’s directive came after a second post-mortem was conducted on Faizan’s body at Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. In April, the HC had ordered officials to exhume the body and conduct a second post-mortem, saying it was necessary to bring out the truth.
On the court’s order, Faizan’s body was exhumed from a graveyard in Assam where he was buried six months ago.
On Tuesday, forensic expert Ajay Gupta presented a report before the HC stating that Faizan did not die by suicide, but was murdered. According to report, Faizan’s death was caused by heavy bleeding and there were head and chest injuries.
