I won’t enter Trinamool through back door: Subrata

Amid controversy over his meeting with Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, the working president of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee Subrata Mukherjee on Friday said if he joins the Trinamool,he will do it openly, and not through the back door.

Amid controversy over his meeting with Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, the working president of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC) Subrata Mukherjee on Friday said if he joins the Trinamool,he will do it openly, and not through the back door.

Mukherjee’s visit to the railway minister’s Kalighat residence earlier this week has fuelled speculations that he may join the Trinamool before the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) polls in June this year.

Unhappy over the meeting, top leaders of the WBPCC have brought the matter to the notice of Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

“If I join the Trinamool,it will not happen through the back door,I will do it openly. I am still with the Congress,” said Mukherjee.

Sources close to Mukherjee said he will be meeting the finance minister and explain why he met the Trinamool chief. This meeting will be held in New Delhi on Saturday, where Banerjee will also be present. Mukherjee left for New Delhi on Friday to meet Union Textile Minister Dayanidhi Maran regarding the ongoing problems plaguing the jute industry in West Bengal.

Trinamool sources, meanwhile, said Mukherjee’s meeting with Banerjee had sparked a controversy among the Trinamool leaders as well.

“With the KMC election round the corner,we apprehend that Mukherjee wants to nominate his own people at the polls. Without Banerjee’s consent,it will not be possible for him to nominate his close associates,” said a senior Trinamool leader.

A section of Trinamool leaders pointed out that Mukherjee was the Mayor of Kolkata when he was with the Trinamool. He had left the party just before the 2005 elections, following a rift with Banerjee over projection for mayoral post.

This time round,in Trinamool, there are at least three contenders for the post — Javed Khan,Leader of Opposition in the

KMC,Sobhandeb Chatterjee,a south Kolkata-based leader and Partha Chatterjee,Leader of Opposition in the Assembly.

“If Mukherjee wants to be projected as the Mayoral candidate for the forthcoming elections,we feel this time Banerjee will not approve,” observed a Trinamool MLA.
