The Calcutta High Court today asked the state government to file status report within March 27 on killings,rape and other incidents that had taken place in Jhargram and other places in West Midanpore district since September 2010.
Earlier this month,eminent writer Mahashweta Devi had filed a PIL alleging that since September 2010,other than the incidents reported in the media,69 FIRs involving more than 500 murders had been lodged in different police stations of West Midnapore,particularly in areas under the jurisdiction of superintendent of police,Jhargram.
According to the petition,women in the villages had been raped and 60 persons went missing from the village. But the police did not carry out investigation on the basis of the FIR lodged at the police stations. The police did not even talk to the complainants.
Advocate Amjad Ali,counsel of the petitioner,said that the special police area was earmarked under the jurisdiction of the SP,Jhargram,to improve the law and order situation there. But there was gradual deterioration of the law and order situation in the area.
