Saajan Dewan,a first year Political Science student attempted suicide in ward 2 of Hindu Hostel on Friday, allegedly following mental torture by Students Federation of India (SFI) students – Wriddho Choudhury,Arusharko Ghosh and Arpan Banerjee. An FIR was lodged with the Jorasanko Police Station. The IC students, however, said they would take the complaint back if the trio gave a written apology.

Ironically, the incident took place when the university has been celebrating its first ever Founders’ Day,and maintaining a peaceful atmosphere in educational institutions was stressed upon during the celebration.

It started on Thursday, when Dewan,an IC (Independents’ Consolidation) supporter was allegedly asked to join SFI or to leave the hostel. The pressure was too much for Dewan, who broke a glass door to vent his frustration and slashed his wrist with a piece of glass.

He was taken to Medical College and was given three stitches. Dewan’s parents, who hail from Tripura, have been informed and he will leave for home on January 25. “We are always targeted for not wanting to join SFI. Since we put in a deputation against them,we have been outcast and subject to a lot of harassment,” said Nilabja Bannerji,a 1st year History student of Presidency University and boarder of ward 2 of Hindu Hostel.
