A traffic jam caused by DYFI members’ road blockade on Tuesday made Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi’s convoy to remain immobile for around half-an-hour near Bally Bridge.

According to sources in the police,Gandhi was returning from Belur Math in Howrah district and his convoy took the route that passes through Dakshineswar and Dunlop, when he was caught in the jam.

After the police intervened, the convoy was diverted to Vidyasagar Setu. “The convoy was not stranded for a long period. We took immediate action,” said H K Kusumakar,Superintendent of Police (Howrah). Senior officials of Howrah police, however, remained tightlipped over inadequate police arrangements for the Governor. According to sources, the district police had information about the road blockade on BT road but they did not change the convoy’s route.

Significantly,Gandhi did not use the hooter of his car and he took only one pilot car with him. The Raj Bhavan, however, refused to comment on the matter terming it as a trivial issue.
