Fires in 5-star hotel,godown too

The day witnessed three fire incidents in the city today. While a devastating fire broke out in a godown of lubricating oil at Paikpara in north Kolkata,fire incidents were reported in a five star hotel in south Kolkata and on Zakaria street in central Kolkata.

Gopal Bhattacharya,Director,Fire and Emergency Fire Services,said: “A 14/14 oil tanker was kept underground. It could have been serious had the tanker caught fire. We sent 10 fire tenders to the spot. The fire was doused using foam.”

“Since huge rallies had been organised in two areas of the city,the fire tenders got delayed,” he added.

At 5 pm,meanwhile,a fire broke out at the fifth floor of a five star hotel near Minto Park. Bhattacharjee said: “It seems there was a short circuit from where the fire spread. Our fire officials rescued 35 people from the fifth floor. Four fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the fire.”

In a separate incident,fire broke out in a slipper godown at Zakaria street in central Kolkata. Four fire tenders were sent to the spot.
