Actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut Monday secured bail in a defamation case after she appeared before a court in Bathinda and tendered an apology to an elderly woman farmer from Punjab for the “misunderstanding” over her 2021 tweet on farmers’ agitation and submitted that she respects every “mata” (mother).

The court had last September directed the BJP MP from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh to be present in person and rejected her plea to appear via video conference. The defamation case stems from the actor’s retweet with her own comment on the complainant, Mahinder Kaur, 81, of Bahadurgarh Jandian village in Punjab’s Bathinda. The comment was made during the 2020-21 farmer protests against the now-repealed farm laws.

After appearing in court, Ranaut told reporters there had been a misunderstanding and that she had not made comments against any individual.

“Never in my dreams could I imagine this… Every mata, be she from Punjab or Himachal, is respectable to me. Whatever misunderstanding happened with the family of Mahinder (Kaur) ji, I gave a message to mata ji through her husband about how she was the victim of a misunderstanding,” Ranaut said. Mahinder Kaur was not present in the court, but her husband Labh Singh was.

Asked if she has acknowledged that she had committed a mistake, Ranaut said that if one looked at the case properly, there was nothing from her side.

“There was a retweet which was used as a meme. I had nothing to do with it,” she said.
