Finally,DNA test results give names to four bodies

Four families, whose relatives were feared dead in the Stephen Court fire on March 23,collected the dead bodies after the DNA samples of the family members matched with the dead bodies at SSKM Hospital morgue.

The bodies of Ruhi Parveen,Fatma Farheen Ansari and Pratik Roy were handed over to the respective families on Friday while the body of Jay Prakash Jaiswal was handed to the family late on Thursday night.

Iqbal Hossain, father of Ruhi Parveen, said: “I was confident that the remains were of my daughter. But I did not want to take any other body. After the DNA test,I am satisfied that I am taking my daughter for the final rites.”

The mood at the hospital once again turned sombre with the families coming to receive the dead bodies. The dilemma of SSKM Hospital authorities, however, continues as four dead bodies are still lying in the hospital morgue and are yet to be claimed.

According to the authorities, since no claimants have turned up,the hospital will initiate the process of disposing the bodies after seeking approval from the court.

“We will appeal to the court that there are no claimants for the body parts. Thereafter,if the court decides that the bodies have to be disposed off (buried or burnt),then we will hand them over to an association like KMC or some other organisation,” said a senior doctor at SSKM Hospital.

Till the time the court decides, the bodies will be kept in the present condition at the hospital morgue. If there are no claimants then the final process will take about a month before they are cremated, informed the hospital authorities.
