Finally, an FIR against TMC MP for ‘rape remark’

The CID has already formed a DIG-led team to probe the case.

The police Saturday lodged an FIR against actor-turned-Trinamool Congress MP Tapas Paul for his “rape speech” following the Calcutta High Court order two days ago.

Justice Nishita Mhatre, who had directed on Thursday that an FIR must be registered against the MP within 72 hours, also ordered the CID to probe into Paul’s speech, allegedly threatening political opponents of rape and murder during public meetings in his Krishnanagar constituency in Nadia district. The CID, it is learnt, has already formed a DIG-led team to probe the case.

Nadia district Superintendent of Police Arnab Ghosh confirmed an FIR has been registered against Paul at the Nakashipara police station. The court’s order on Thursday had come on a PIL filed by social activist Biplab Chowdhury, who had moved the HC after the police did not lodge a complaint against the controversial remark.

The Krishnanagar MP, while addressing a workers’ meeting at Chowmatha village in Nadia district on June 14, had said, “If any opponent touches any Trinamool girl, any father, any child, I will destroy his entire family. Aamar chheleder dhukiye debo, rape kore chole jaabe, rape kore chole jaabe (I will unleash my boys, they will rape them, rape them).”

The speech was recorded on camera and handed over to a section of the media. Once the matinee idol of Bengali films, Paul virtually retracted from public life after the controversy. He has neither attended the Lok Sabha sessions nor any party activity ever since the incident took place.
The actor-MP had, on July 1, tendered an unconditional apology to his party.
