The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday questioned Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee in Kolkata for over nine hours in connection with its probe into the alleged jobs scam in government schools of West Bengal.
Abhishek, 35, who skipped the coordination committee meeting of the Opposition INDIA bloc in New Delhi, reached the ED’s Kolkata office in Salt Lake around 11.30 am. Sources said that ED officials began his questioning at 12.10 and continued close to 9 pm.
ED sources said that Abhishek, who is the nephew of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and is considered Number 2 in TMC, was being asked about his association with M/s Leaps and Bounds Private Limited, a company which allegedly received kickbacks of the school jobs scam. In May, ED arrested Sujoy Krishna Bhadra, claiming that he was the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the company. The ED also claimed Abhishek Banerjee is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of M/s Leaps and Bounds Private Limited and was a director in company from April 2012 to January 2014.
After coming out of the ED office after 9 pm, Abhishek lashed out at the BJP for “using central probe agencies to target Trinamool Congress”. He also dared ED to arrest him if they could prove his involvement.
He also alleged that he was summoned intentionally on a day when he was supposed to attend the coordination committee meeting of the INDIA bloc alliance in Delhi.
