TMC MLA Abdul Karim Chowdhury on Sunday once again spoke against the party and threatened to not support any Bill tabled by the government in the Assembly and abstain from voting in the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls in the state if “atrocities” on his loyalists allegedly by a rival faction continued.

Speaking to mediapersons, TMC’s Islampur MLA in Uttar Dinajpur district said: “Our workers are coming under constant target from a section of our party. Their rights are being violated. If this continues, I will boycott the party programmes and not take part in discussion in Assembly or will not support any Bill.”

“If a faction in my party goes on committing atrocities against common people, many of whom are my loyalists; if beatings and arson go on unabated without any interference by party higher-ups, I will be forced to abstain from voting in the Rajya Sabha polls,” he added.

Since last month, the TMC MLA has been vocal against the party leadership after his choice of candidates was denied a ticket in the just concluded panchayat elections. Chowdhury had fielded Independent candidates against the TMC candidates. The Independents, however, lost in the election. Chowdhury alleged that since then the Independent candidates were being targeted by a section of TMC workers.

“Despite bringing the matter to the notice of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, nothing has been done to stop the atrocities. I will urge the administration to take action against the people responsible for this,” said Chowdhury.

The TMC, however, refused to give much importance to the allegation. “He (Chowdhury) is a rebel party leader. He is making baseless allegations. Those who indulged in violence on the day of the election have fled their homes. The police are looking for them. No atrocities are being carried out on anyone. Only the culprits will have to answer for their misdeeds,” said TMC leader and Islampur block president, Zakir Hossain.

The TMC has announced candidates for six Rajya Sabha seats in West Bengal which will go to polls on July 24.
