At 3,76,086, the number of girls appearing for the exam were higher than the number of boys who took the examinations, he added. Gangopadhyay also said that last year’s pass percentage was slightly higher than 2023’s. In 2022, the pass percentage for the state board Class X exams was 86.6%.
Devdutta Majhi was the West Bengal Madhyamik by scoring topper 697 marks out of 700 – 99.57 per cent, he added.
Among districts, Purba Medinipur clocked the highest pass percentage at 96.81%, followed by Kalimpong (94.13%) and Kolkata (93.75%). Of the 118 Top 10 rank holders, 21 are from Malda, 17 from Purba Bardhaman , 14 from Bankura, 13 from South 24 Parganas. 11 from Purba Medinipur , nine from North 24 Parganas, nine from Paschim Medinipur, six from Purulia, five from Hooghly, four from Howrah, three from Coochbehar, two from Birbhum and one each from Dakshin Dinajpur, Jalpaiguri, Jhargram and Nadia.
Gangopadhyay also said that 13.67 per cent examinees scored more than 60 per cent marks in this year’s exam, while the examination of 20 candidates were cancelled. He also said two students’ results had been withheld due to technical reasons. “The pass percentage among students belonging to the SC category was 82.88 per cent and 76.03 per cent for the ST category,” he added.
Congratulating the students, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted: “Congratulations and best wishes to all the students who passed the secondary examination. May each of your future days be filled with success.”
According to the WBBSE president, there was a decline in the number of registrations for the Class 10 examinations this year.
“A total of 6,98,628 students had registered for the West Bengal Madhyamik exams in 2023, compared to over 10 lakh in 2022,” Gangopadhyay said. He suggested that the decline may be attributed to students’ perception that they might not have been “adequately prepared” for the board exams due to the transition to online classes.
