As many as 82 municipal bodies, including Kolkata Municipal Corporation and Salt Lake Municipality, will go to polls in May. In the CPM state committee meeting today, party state secretary Biman Bose has circulated a note to all the members, asking the district level leaders to allow the allies more seats. The Bloc and RSP have reportedly claimed more seats in the civic polls this time than in 2005.
Bose has mentioned in the note that of the 82 municipalities in the 2005 municipal elections,54 were won by the Left Front, but this time the battle would be very difficult due to the changing political scenario of the state.
According to CPM sources, the party has conducted an assessment of its prospect in the upcoming civic polls. Reports from several districts indicate that it would be very hard for the party to reclaim more than 20 civic bodies in the state, sources said. In the backdrop of this grim political situation, senior leaders of the party reportedly asked the district leaders to settle the differences with the allies.
The party, meanwhile, has decided to launch a campaign in the first week of April against the Maoist brutality in south west part of the state particularly in Purulia,Bankura and West Midnapore district.
