*Kolkata got the first batch of solar powered rickshaws called ‘Soleckshaw’ on Sunday. High on green norms — it has zero carbon emission — with the option of using pedals, the product developed by Durgapur branch of Council for Scientific and Industrial Research has the potential of doing away with the traditional three wheelers in the city.

*The new rickshaws can attain a maximum speed of 18 kilometres per hour with a very less human effort. Another interesting feature is that the battery could be recharged also by conventional electricity if solar power is not available.

*“Certainly,it can be used to replace the hand-pulled rickshaw,” said Power Minister Manish Gupta, who was present at the unveiling of the soleckshaws, along with Kolkata Mayor Shovon Chatterjee at Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute Kolkata in Jadavpur.
