City police offer computer training for poor students

The Kolkata police have extended the facility of Kiran,a free computer certification course for underprivileged youths,to two more police stations,Garden Reach and Karaya Police station,on Saturday.

Under the scheme,40 youths in two batches will be trained for a three-month diploma course. The classes will be held at the police stations thrice a week for two hours —- one hour for practical and another for theory classes. “We will try to bring at least two more police stations under the programme this year,” said Gautam Mohan Chakrabarti,the Commissioner of Kolkata Police,inaugurating the scheme at Karaya police station.

The commissioner said the course was launched a few months ago at Beniapukur police station and is providing good results. “Four young women,who have done well during the training programme,have been offered jobs in private companies,” Chakrabarti said. “This initiative will help in the transformation of police as an organisation which is feared to one that people can trust,” said Phalguni Mukherjee,MD,Brainware,the company roped in by the Kolkata police to impart vocational training to the unemployed youths.
