The foundation stone-laying ceremony of Jalpaiguri Circuit Bench will be performed jointly by Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court Jaynarayan Patel and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on September 1. The decision was made after state Law Minister Moloy Ghatak met the Chief Justice and convinced him to attend the function. The Chief Minister was earlier scheduled to lay the foundation stone and a few days ago,the state government had invited the Chief Justice to attend the event. This did not go down well with the judiciary with judges objecting to it,said sources. The judges were of the opinion that it was a programme of the Calcutta High Court where the Chief Justice could not be made a mere spectator.
