A Day after admitting lapses by his own administration — which being considered as one of the principal reasons behind the Silda massacre — Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Friday called for peoples’ vigil against the Maoists.

Addressing a rally in Birbhum district,Bhattacharjee pointed out that Maoist cadres operating in different parts of the state are mostly outsiders. “Beware of them and keep a close watch on every unknown person in your village. Whether the Maoists can function actively depends on the people. Do not let them spread their root in your area,” he added.

The rally was organised by district Left Front in a bid to rejuvenate supporters who are lying idle since the 2009 Lok Sabha elections.

In his half-an-hour speech,Bhattacharjee alleged a nexus between the Trinamool Congress and the Maoists.

“Our state has never witnessed such disturbance before. Few parties are trying to create trouble. We are trying to develop the state, but they are trying to stop work,” he said.

“Maoists have joined their hands with the Trinamool. What the Maoists do,nobody knows. They used to talk about the welfare of the poor, but now they are killing them. We have given power to the poor through panchayats but the Maoists are trying to dislodge them from the rural power centre,”

he added.

Bhattacharjee admitted that Maoists are operating in Purulia,Bankura and West Midnapore districts.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar ready to talk peace with Maoists

ITANAGAR: Art of Living guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar on Friday said he is ready to mediate between the Maoists and the West Bengal government provided both sides agreed to the suggestion. Referring to the killing of 24 Eastern Frontier Rifle jawans in a recent Maoist attack in West Bengal,he said it was the fallout of an atmosphere of mistrust between the rebels and the state government.
