Bombs lobbed at homes, 5 workers injured: ISF

The incident comes as Section 144 of the CrPc has been imposed in Bhangar since Tuesday midnight as gram panchayat boards will be formed in the area from August 9-12.

Indian Secular Front (ISF) members alleged that crude bombs were hurled at their party members’ homes on Wednesday during a rally organised by the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) at Majherait area of Bhangar-II block in South 24 Parganas district. ISF members claimed that five members of the party were injured and blamed the TMC for the alleged attack. The ruling party has, however, denied the allegations.

The incident comes as Section 144 of the CrPc has been imposed in Bhangar since Tuesday midnight as gram panchayat boards will be formed in the area from August 9-12.

An ISF leader said, “TMC goons charged crude bombs at ISF supporters’ houses. The injured were rescued and taken to the Jirangachha Block Primary Health Centre for treatment.”

Reacting to the allegations, local TMC leader Hakimul Islam said, “All allegations are false. The ISF is behind the tension in Bhangar.”

Following the incident, Rapid Action Force and police personnel were deployed in the area. According to sources, no arrests have been made in connection with the alleged incident so far.

During the panchayat elections this year, incidents of violence were reported right from the nomination process. A total of 55 persons died in poll-related violence.

Of these, seven casualties were reported from Bhangar. The victims included two TMC supporters and four ISF supporters.

The state government has set August 16 as the last date for forming the panchayat boards.
