Bomb hoax call on sat phone sends airport in a tizzy

Panic gripped Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport on Thursday after an unidentified caller threatened to blow it up.

Around 3.30 in the evening,a male caller called the airport and informed the operator that there was a bomb placed in one of the flights that will go off after two hours, said a senior CISF official. According to sources,the caller identified himself as a member of the LTTE group and spoke in English with a strong Tamil accent. At that time,around seven domestic flights and two international flights were scheduled for departure. CISF personnel,along with a bomb disposal squad,immediately swung into action. Visitors were also barred from entering the airport.

All the passengers were thoroughly checked. But no flight was delayed because of the checking,airport officials said. A person was detained after his bag was found lying near the mens toilet in the domestic terminal. Sources said that in all probability the call was made from a satellite phone.

This is unprecedented because usually hoax callers do not call from satellite phones. We are trying to trace the location but since it is a satellite phone,it is a little difficult, said security officials.

Barasat: One person was killed and five others were injured today when several crude bombs accidentally exploded while being made at Phatikpara in Titagarh. One person died on the spot. The members of bomb squad came to examine as the scale of explosion was very high. The building was damaged by the impact when the bombs went off, Sub-Divisional Police Officer,Samarjit Roy,said. The injured people have been shifted to R G Kar Medical College and Hospital,he said. PTI
