The fear of the pink slip pushed a 23-year-old trainee engineer from Bengal, working at Infosys Technology Mysore,to end his life. Abhijeet Mukherjee,a graduate from the Meghnad Saha College of Engineering and Technology, committed suicide early on Wednesday morning as he did not perform well in the internal examinations of the company held on Tuesday. His body reached the city Friday morning and was later cremated at the Shibpur crematorium. A pall of gloom has descended on the family at 3/2 P K Chowdhury First Bylane in Shibpur. In his suicide note, the deceased mentioned about his failure stating he had no complaints against the company. His relatives said he was under pressure after 42 employees of the company were sacked as they did not perform well in the internal examinations. According to his parents,Mukherjee had been exceptionally good at studies and got a job at Infosys Technologies when he was in the third year. He left his home to join the company at Mysore on February 21. He had appeared in four internal examinations since then and scored well in three of them. The re-examination of the fourth paper was held on Tuesday in which he again did not perform well. Mukherjee told his parents that he was prepared for the test and knew the answers also but became nervous during the exam. On Tuesday night,Mukherjee spoke to his father at 10.30 pm and said he was not feeling well as he had not been able to perform well in the internal examinations. His father,Asish Mukherjee (48),an employee with Pidlite Industries Ltd,tried to calm him down that even if he lost the job he could return and explore other avenues. Next day his mother,Chandra Mukherjee (46),tried contacting him but his mobile went unreachable. Later,he was found hanging from the ceiling. On being informed, his relatives rushed to Mysore to recover his body. He used to say that Infosys was his dream platform for his career, said his uncle Tapas Sarkar.
