Security personnel try to control a crowd at the accident site in Jaipur, on Saturday. Rohit Jain Paras Tension prevailed in the old city of Jaipur on Saturday following the alleged murder of a 17-year-old youth in what police claimed was a misunderstanding following a road rage.
Jaipur Police Commissioner Biju George Joseph said the incident took place under Subhash Chowk police station limits late on Friday. “Two motorcycles had collided and (one of the) two persons, who had stopped to see it, was assaulted by the locals. There was no motive, it was just some misunderstanding,” he said. As per police, Iqbal had reportedly stopped to help the bike-riders after their fall.
Manak Chowk SHO Bhupendra Singh said, “There was some argument between the two who had collided but it was resolved and they had left.”
However, Iqbal, who was on the spot, allegedly got into an argument with a local from another community. Following this, some locals assaulted Iqbal with sticks and rods. Iqbal collapsed and was rushed to SMS Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries late on Friday during treatment.
Police Commissioner Joseph said an FIR has been lodged in this connection and most of the persons involved in the murder have been picked up.
As per a statement issued by the office of the Director General of Police, police have detained about 15 persons.
On Saturday morning, angry locals gathered to protest and shut shops in parts of Subhash Chowk and Ramganj, while also blocking the roads. Additional police had to be deployed to maintain law and order while local MLAs Amiz Kagzi and Rafeek Khan were also tasked with calming the tempers.
A resident of Jaisinghpura, Iqbal’s mother Naima Khatoon said, “He had gone to his grandmother’s place with his brother for a daawat (feast). I want the people who killed my child to be hanged at the same place they killed him. He was born after a mannat (prayer) of 14 years and hadn’t even turned 18. He was just 17.”
Kagzi said a cheque of Rs 50 lakh as ex-gratia sum has been handed over to the family, while Iqbal’s brother Adnan will be given a contractual job as per rules. Additionally, a dairy booth will be allotted to Iqbal’s father Abdul Majeed.
However, Majeed demanded a compensation of Rs 1 crore. “All the guilty should be arrested and hanged. We also want that all original CCTV footage of the incident be shared with us so that there is no editing later,” he said, adding a government job should also be given instead of contractual job.
