Jodhpur: Delhi Public School rusticates students for consuming alcohol in classroom

The Jodhpur branch of Delhi Public School on Wednesday rusticated a class IX student and suspended four of his classmates after it was found that they had consumed alcohol inside the class room on Tuesday.

The Jodhpur branch of Delhi Public School on Wednesday rusticated a class IX student and suspended four of his classmates after it was found that they had consumed alcohol inside the class room on Tuesday.

The student had brought along two 500 ml bottles of Pepsi spiked with alcohol to the classroom. In the gap between two periods, he passed the bottle along to other students of class IX-A.

Several students drank from the bottle and one of the girls reportedly got inebriated. While local newspapers said “tipsy” students started dancing in the classroom, the school administration denied the claim.

Local news reports quoted parents saying 35 (28 boys and 7 girls) students drank the spiked cold drink. After parents reacted angrily, the school administration initiated action.

“The incident occurred yesterday but we did not want to blame the student without conducting proper investigations. When our internal investigation confirmed the role of the student, we held a meeting with his parents and rusticated the child,” DPS Public Relations Officer Shaheen Hassan told The Indian Express.

“Four other students, who had tasted the drink, have also been suspended. The girl student was taken to the hospital and she is fine now,” she said.

“This is an unfortunate aberration. We don’t even allow junk food inside the school and the teachers keep a strict vigil ensuring that Indian sanskaars are followed,” she said.
