Celebrations broke out in Telangana after the Congress said A Revanth Reddy would be the new chief minister. As soon as AICC general secretary KC Venugopal announced that Reddy was elected leader of the Congress Legislature Party, cadres waiting since Tuesday morning started bursting crackers and distributing sweets across the state.

After the Congress ended the BRS’s nine-year rule by winning 64 seats, the party was in a quandary as there were more than one probables in the race to helm the first Congress government in the state, which the party-led UPA government helped create in 2014.

On Monday, the Congress Legislative Party passed a unanimous resolution to authorise AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge to appoint a CLP leader. Moved by Revanth Reddy, who is the state Congress chief, the resolution was seconded by Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, N Uttam Kumar Reddy, Damodar Rajanarasimha, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, Sridhar Babu, Ponam Prabhakar, Tummala Nageshwara Rao, D Anasuya and Prem Sagar.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said the authorisation to appoint the CLP leader, who will become the chief minister, was being sent to Kharge. “The legislators resolved that they will abide by whatever decision the AICC takes. The resolution also thanks the people of Telangana for giving an opportunity to the Congress. The newly elected legislators thank AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and all senior Congress leaders who campaigned here,” he said Monday.

Before the CLP meeting, which lasted for about 20 minutes, Shivakumar and other senior leaders held a short meeting at a hotel in Hyderabad.

While state Congress leaders waited the whole day to hear from the AICC, sources said that Shivakumar was summoned to New Delhi in the evening for a meeting on Tuesday with Kharge and other leaders. Although all senior Congress MLAs seconded the unanimous resolution authorising the AICC to name the CLP leader, the central leadership apparently expects opposition to Revanth Reddy from some factions. While Reddy was the frontrunner for the chief minister post, there were other aspirants like Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, N Uttam Kumar Reddy and Komatireddy Venkat Reddy.

The AICC has announced that Revanth Reddy would be the chief minister but not indicated if there will be any deputy chief ministers, to accommodate Vikramarka or Uttam Kumar Reddy.
