Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president A Revanth Reddy and several party leaders were Friday prevented from proceeding to Osmania University in Hyderabad to join a scheduled protest in connection with the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) paper leak case. Leaders were restricted to their homes while activists were picked up by the police at various places to foil the protest. Reddy was invited to join the protest at the university Friday afternoon.

On Twitter, Revanth shared a video of police deployment outside his Jubilee Hills residence and captioned it with a challenge to Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao. “If KCR-KTR has the guts to discuss the TSPSC question paper scam in the presence of Osmania University students… If you are honest, if you have no role in the scam then accept my challenge,” he tweeted.

On Thursday, the TPCC chief – who raised allegations against IT minister K T Rama Rao (KTR) in the recruitment exams fiasco – appeared before the special investigation team (SIT) of Hyderabad police to present the evidence he had gathered against the ruling dispensation. The SIT has also summoned BJP state president Bandi Sanjay.

Starting Friday, a joint action committee (JAC) of students and unemployed youths are organising a two-day protest demonstration ‘Vidyarthi Nirudyoga Maha Nirasana Deeksha’ at Osmania University’s Arts College. The agenda is to press for a judicial probe into the question paper leak scam or investigation by CBI, and dismissal of the incumbent TSPSC and its chairman B Janardhan Reddy. They also demand compensation of Rs 1 lakh for candidates who now have to prepare once again due to the cancellation of exams.

The activists of the JAC said such anti-democratic actions from the state would not prevent them from raising their demands and that protest demonstrations would be held across state universities and district headquarters from Saturday. They were planning to take out a rally from the OU Arts college to the Telangana Martyrs’ Memorial at Gun Park when they were detained by the police.

Revanth has been critical of the SIT and its scope to investigate the case under political pressure. Congress leaders said the police have detained several of its leaders to foil the planned protest. Congress leader Addanki Dayakar, who was also restricted to his residence, said the state government was trying to protect those responsible for the question paper leak by arresting Opposition leaders who raise their voices in support of job aspirants. AICC secretary Sampath Kumar and former MPs Mallu Ravi and Anjan Kumar Yadav were also detained in their homes.

After appearing before the SIT, Revanth said it was KTR who was trying to protect the culprits in the scam. According to him, KTR’s personal assistant Tirupathi is closely associated with accused Atla Rajashekar Reddy who worked as a network expert in TSPSC. Alleging that the government failed to instil confidence in job aspirants in the matter, Revanth also demanded the dismissal of KTR from the Cabinet and asked the SIT to question the minister as well.

Meanwhile, KTR said legal notices were being sent to Revanth as well as Sanjay for conspiring to discredit the government by dragging his name into the TSPSC issue with political malice. “Dragging the Telangana government and me into this matter without understanding the autonomous nature of the constitutionally constituted Public Service Commission proves their ignorance,” KTR said, adding that he would not tolerate any attempts to defame him. He said a terrible conspiracy is being hatched by both the BJP and Congress to stall the entire recruitment process.

The Hyderabad police on March 13 arrested nine people, including five government employees, for their alleged role in the leak of question papers set by the TSPSC for ongoing recruitments into various state government departments. The arrested accused include two TSPSC staffers and a police constable.

The police were investigating a complaint from the commission on March 11 suspecting hacking of its security systems. It cancelled the exams scheduled for March 12, 15 and 16, and later, based on police findings, cancelled the exams held on March 5. It also cancelled exams held on January 22 and February 26 along with the Group-1 prelims held on October 16 last year.
