If you are a Delhi University (DU) student who commutes to college by the Delhi Metro, the recent fare hike could affect your monthly budget.

Starting Monday, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has increased fares across all lines. The hike ranges from Re 1 to Rs 4, depending on the distance travelled. Meanwhile, fares on the Airport Express Line have gone up by Rs 5.

For students commuting regularly to Delhi University, the monthly Metro expense could now go up to Rs 2,816, up from Rs 2,640. This estimate is based on a student falling under the highest fare slab — for journeys over 32 km — where the one-way peak-hour fare has risen from Rs 60 to Rs 64. The calculation assumes two trips per day (to and from college) over 22 working days in a month.

For instance, students travelling from Gurgaon’s Millennium City Centre to Vishwavidyalaya station in North Campus, or Noida Electronic City to Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus Station will fall in this category. The Delhi Metro offers a 10% discount on fares to commuters who use a Smart Card.

According to DMRC, the revision is a minimal adjustment. For short trips of up to 2 km, the fare has risen from Rs 10 to Rs 11. Journeys between 2–5 km will now cost Rs 21 instead of Rs 20, and for 5-12 km, fares have been revised from Rs 30 to Rs 32.

For longer trips, the fare has been raised to Rs 54 from the earlier Rs 50 for travel between 21-32 km, while journeys beyond 32 km will now cost Rs 64, up from Rs 60.

Discount on Metro fares is an issue that has cropped up in DU’s student politics quite often. Different student outfits of political parties have promised discounted fares at various times.
