Many fear celebrating Hyderabad’s Liberation due to vote bank politics, says Amit Shah

Giving their own dimensions to the occasion marking 75 years of annexation of Hyderabad to the Indian Union, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao led separate functions in Hyderabad city Saturday.

Home Minister Amit Shah, after unfurling the national flag at the Parade Grounds marking the ‘Hyderabad Liberation Day’, said that had it not been for independent India’s first home minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel it would have taken many more years to free the erstwhile princely state of Hyderabad from the Nizam rule. Meanwhile, the Telangana CM, at another event to mark ‘Telangana National Integration Day’, has called upon the people to be wary of “the conspiracy to distort history”.

Taking a dig at the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi party, Shah said, “after so many years, there was a demand from the people to celebrate Hyderabad’s liberation with state-sponsored celebrations. But unfortunately, 75 years are over and those who ruled this region could not dare to celebrate due to vote bank politics.”

CM Rao, who was also invited for Amit Shah’s event, organised by the Union Ministry of Tourism and Culture, however, skipped the function. He unfurled the Tricolour at Public Gardens, a few kilometers away.

Shah said that promises were made during election campaigns, but “as soon as they (TRS) came to power, they turned their back due to fear of Razakars.”

The Razakars were the Muslim paramilitary volunteer force that was active during the time of Nizams.

Shah paid rich tributes to Sardar Patel’s resolve to fulfil the dreams of a united India as envisioned by Mahatma Gandhi. “Today is a historic day. India attained Independence on August 15, 1947, but Hyderabad continued to remain under the Nizam. And, for the next 13 months people of Hyderabad state were terrorised by the Razakars. On this day we must remember the role played by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He knew that as the Razakars were ruling, Hyderabad state would not join the Indian Union, and the dream of ‘Akhand Bharat’ (Undivided India) would not be fulfilled. If it was not for Sardar Patel, Hyderabad would have taken many years to get liberated. It was Sardar Patel who defeated the Nizam’s army and Razakars through ‘police action’, he said during the event attended by Union Minister G Kishan Reddy, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Karnataka’s Transport Minister B Sriramulu.

Shah credited the decision taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to celebrate ‘Hyderabad Liberation Day’, which according to him, has forced all parties to follow suit. “They are celebrating but are still scared to call it liberation. I want to tell them to be fearless because now Razakars cannot take decisions in this country and it has been 75 years since independence,” he said.

Shah called for more research and documentation regarding the atrocities committed by the Nizam’s army and Razakars against freedom fighters and civilians of the erstwhile princely state. This, he wanted, should be taken to all corners of the country to pay rich tributes to the martyrs of Hyderabad Liberation and create a sense of patriotism in the next generation.

Listing out several incidents and decisions of the then monarch, Shah said that the people of the erstwhile princely state had to face the atrocities and injustice meted out by the rulers.

“In every way, the Nizam and his Razakars tortured the people of this region against which our people fought and won. Many have laid down their lives,” he said, and added that whether anyone celebrates this day or not, the Central Government will proudly do so year after year.
