A family friend, Shivakumar, said that the body was identified because the gas station manager had Chandrashekar’s passport. “When the authorities from the US called, the family went into shock,” Shivakumar said. “If the Ministry of External Affairs helps bring his body back home, we will be grateful.”

The family also said that they would like to know the reason behind the attack. “We hardly know anything about what transpired. We hope the authorities will tell us why he was shot at in the first place,” Shivakumar said.

Chandrashekar had previously completed his Bachelor’s in Dental Surgery from Hyderabad before going to the US.

“He was a brilliant Dalit student from our LB Nagar area. He had big dreams and had gone to the US for a Master’s degree. His parents are heartbroken; it is an unimaginable tragedy for them,’’ T Harish Rao, Bharat Rashtra Samiti leader and former minister, said.
