Officials said the water level had started rising late Saturday. According to the flood control department, the rise in level can be attributed to the release of water from barrages upstream, which typically takes 48 to 50 hours to reach Delhi. The increase in volume could be the result of heavy rainfall in upper catchment areas of Haryana and Uttarakhand, they added.

At 5 pm on Saturday, the discharge from Hathnikund barrage was recorded at 58,540 cusec. While the discharge from Wazirabad barrage was 49,760 cusec, the figure for Okhla barrage was 53,801, said officials.
