Yamuna shows signs of receding, more rainfall expected on Saturday

The surging Yamuna in Delhi showed signs of receding on Friday with the water level recorded at 207.05 m at 8 pm at the main flood forecasting station of Old Railway Bridge. The river had touched 207.48 m on Thursday morning, its third-highest level since 1963.

The water level was recorded at 207.12 m at 6 pm and at 207.16 m at 5 pm, the Central Water Commission (CWC) said.

Current indications show the level will continue to recede in Delhi, the CWC said, adding that at 8 am on Saturday, it is likely to be at 206.4 m and gradually go below the evacuation mark of 206 m.

Officials said the discharge from Haryana’s Hathnikund Barrage eased from over 1.08 lakh cusecs in the morning to around 54,000 cusecs by the evening. At the Wazirabad Barrage, the flow reduced from 1.74 lakh cusecs to about 1.49 lakh cusecs through the day, while Okhla barrage discharge saw a decline from 2.44 lakh cusecs to 2.31 lakh cusecs.

Friday, meanwhile, saw rain lashing Delhi-NCR again.

For Saturday too, the India Meteorological Department has forecast thunderstorms and rain. Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 33.2 degree Celsius on Friday, 0.9 degrees below normal, while the minimum temperature stood at 24 degrees, 1.9 degrees below season’s average.
