Work on Khan Market revamp begins

The New Delhi Municipal Council has started working on the redevelopment plan for Khan Market.

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has started working on the redevelopment plan for Khan Market. The various components of the plan are fire safety, parking, traffic circulation, and creating a standard plan for the entire area. A design has been prepared by NDMC to address the fire safety issues of the market, and the chief fire officer (CFO) has given his approval for the same, said officials.

The plan includes constructing proper stairs, which will lead to the Middle Circle. “Due to space constraints in the area, making the design was challenging. But we have finally come up with a plan,in coordination with the Delhi Fire Services,” said NDMC secretary Santosh D Vaidya.

The earlier plan to install collapsible ladders was turned down by the Supreme Court-appointed monitoring committee.

The civic body has also received the in-principle approval for construction of an underground multi-level parking at Amrita Shergil Marg. The land, measuring approximately 5,400 sq metres, will accommodate around 1,000 cars.”There are two bungalows in the area, which will also be demolished to make space for the parking lot. The area surrounding the parking lot will be maintained as a green area,” said NDMC chairperson Archana Arora. Besides this, the NDMC and Traffic Police have jointly worked out a new traffic circulation plan for Khan Market to further decongest the area.

The re-development plan is being made in consultation with stakeholders of the markets and the Urban Development Ministry. The guidelines laid down in the Master Plan 2021 will be taken into consideration while chalking out the plans, facilitating conversion of residential flats to commercial.

The standard plan for this market will also be prepared, keeping in mind issues such as building safety, subdivision of plots, etc.
