A 36-year-old woman was killed and her husband and two children were critically-injured,in an accident on GT Karnal Road near Bhalswa Diary in Northwest Delhi. The family was driving to the Capital from Chandigarh. They were to attend a griha pravesh ceremony at a relatives house in Jeevan Park,Janakpuri,West Delhi. Police said it appeared that Umesh Gupta (41),was driving the Chevrolet Spark car,which hit a truck. The accident took place at around 3 in the morning. Umeshs wife,Ritu Gupta (36),was in the passengers seat while their two children,Bhuvan (13) and Tapas (10) were seated at the back. It appears his car hit a truck from the left side,after which it swerved to the other side of the lane,and was hit by another truck from behind. It appears his wife suffered critical injuries when their car hit the first truck. Umesh was not under the influence of alcohol, said an investigating officer. The two truck drivers fled the scene,leaving their trucks behind. The vehicles,which were coming from Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar and had Rajasthan and Haryana registration plates,were impounded by police. The injured were rushed to the Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial hospital,where Ritu was declared dead on arrival. Bhuvan,who was seated on the left rear seat,is currently on ventilator support. Hospital authorities said the three injured had been shifted to Max Hospital at Shalimar Bagh. Umesh had reportedly received a job offer in Gujarat,and the family was to leave for Rajkot a few days after the house warming ceremony in the Capital. Sushil Gupta,Umeshs brother,said,Umesh had spoken to me on the phone around 10 pm,before leaving for Delhi. Later,around 3:30 in the morning,I got a call from the police informing me about the accident. Police said they had contacted the owners of the trucks,and were on the lookout for the absconding drivers.
