From designs inspired from Kerala’s backwaters to Sikkim’s monasteries, major roundabouts in Delhi are set for a cultural transformation. This comes after the Public Works Department (PWD) on Thursday announced a themed revamp of 41 key roundabouts under its jurisdiction, aimed at showcasing India’s cultural heritage.

Announcing the initiative, PWD minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said the move is part of a wider beautification project.

According to officials, each roundabout — including those at Rajghat, Malviya Nagar, Pusa Road, Shankar Road and Patel Nagar — will feature distinctive art, heritage and traditional elements associated with various states and Union Territories.

Officials said that designs will include motifs inspired by Rajasthan’s forts and palaces, Odisha’s Konark Sun temple, Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya Ram temple, Sikkim’s monasteries, Kerala’s backwater patterns, Gujarat’s Statue of Unity, and bamboo artistry from the North-East, among others.

Officials noted that select roundabouts will also be dedicated to the Indian Armed Forces, symbolising valour, discipline and sacrifice. Installations representing the Army, Navy and Air Force will honour the nation’s defenders and their role in safeguarding the Republic, officials added.

The beautification will also incorporate artistic landscaping, advanced lighting systems, sculptural installations, murals and thematic greenery — blending traditional aesthetics with modern urban design, officials said.

“The initiative is expected to enrich Delhi’s visual identity and reinforce its image as a true national capital that reflects the cultural spirit of the entire country,” said officials.

The project is scheduled for completion by the final week of January 2026, ahead of Delhi’s peak tourist and event season, officials added.

“Delhi is not just the Capital of a government; it is the Capital of an entire nation. Every corner of this city should tell the story of India’s unity in diversity, its culture and its courage,” said the minister.

He added, “Through this initiative, PWD is transforming ordinary roundabouts into extraordinary symbols of pride — celebrating every state, every tradition, and the spirit of our Armed Forces that keeps the nation strong and united.”
