Monsoon watch: 62.7 mm of rain was recorded on saturday and sunday
A Week ago,the city was worried whether the monsoon will be deficient yet again. But the rain over the weekend has wiped out the deficiency and for the first time in four years the total rainfall in July was above the average at 227.8 mm,2 mm more than the normal value of 225 mm.
Between Saturday night and Sunday morning,62.7 mm of rain was recoded at the Met Department in Safdarjung. This is good news as for the last four years,July has been receiving scanty rainfall interspersed by long gaps of dryness and hot weather.
As the city steps into the month of August, more rains are expected. August has been witnessing heavier rains than July for the past four years and this time too there are predictions of heavy rainfall. However, the pitfalls of heavy rainfalls include mile long traffic jams and water-logging all over the city. For the next two days at least the temperature will remain within the range of 32 to 35 degrees.
On Sunday, just like its preceding days, the maximum temperature remained cool at 32.8 degrees, one degree below normal. On Saturday, when the whole afternoon witnessed incessant rains, the maximum temperature had dipped to 29.6 degrees,a departure of four degrees from normal. While a couple of days ago, nights were hot, with the arrival of rains, they have also dipped. On Sunday, the minimum temperature was 24.0 degrees, three degrees below normal.
The Met has predicted heavy showers for most of August. We expect good showers in the next three days. Most of the days will remain cloudy. Though the days will be cool, the high humidity may make people uncomfortable, it said.
