We want a clean chit: Vij

Shot Putter Saurav Vij,who had tested positive for the stimulant methylhexaneamine today received some good news as his provisional suspension.

Shot Putter Saurav Vij,who had tested positive for the stimulant methylhexaneamine today received some good news as his provisional suspension has been lifted by NADA (National Anti-Doping Agency). With the verdict, the shotputter who surpassed Shakti Singh’s national record earlier this year with a throw of 20.65m in a Delhi State meet was included once again in the Commonwealth Games squad.

Earlier on Monday,NADA gave a green signal to the 12 athletes who had all tested positive for Methylhexaneamine. Having initially faced bans ranging from two years to life, the athletes only received a warning. However even this was not acceptable to the tainted dozen. They stood against the verdict and managed to get a further hearing scheduled for October 21. “We want a clean chit. Warning is the same as being declared guilty. A clean chit has to be the solution since the drug was not consumed deliberately,” said a determined Vij talking to Sportline.

Having survived a two year ban that would also have ruled him out of the 2012 Olympics,Vij is getting his training back on track again after going more than two weeks without practice. He is currently training at Jogi Health Center,Palam under the supervision of Jogesh Kumar. For Vij,the past couple of weeks have been traumatic but he insists that the experience has made him tougher. He is spending long hours hurling the shot and regaining his strength, trying to make up for the lost time. “A proper worked out schedule is sketched out for me and I am following it closely. The strength work is going on and I know soon it will be time to perform to the best of my ability,” said Vij.

The Delhi based shot putter is equally excited to be a part of the Games Village which he will join along with the rest of the athletics squad on the October 1. “The games village in Melbourne during the Youth Commonwealth games was worth appreciating. But it is a special feeling to be in India and perform in front of my home crowd. I hope I do well and bag a medal,” said an elated Vij.
