The streets of Hapur,a town in Uttar Pradesh near Delhi, were empty, with only a few shops open on the hot Thursday afternoon. There was a steady stream of crowd walking towards the Ramlila Maidan, along with a few policemen. A small boy pushing a cart of empty gas cylinders replied to our query,Hum behenji ko dekhne ja rahein hain (We are going to see behenji).
More than 4,000 people have been sitting in a disciplined manner, under the scorching sun,for more than two hours. They had all come to see behenjiUttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samajwadi Party chief,Mayawati.
Displaying their wares at the entrance of the maidaan were traders selling poorly photoshopped posters of Babasaheb Ambedkar,Mayawati and freedom fighters, alongside locally recorded music CDs and other items.
Dhruv (5),who was carrying a huge blue flag in his hand, poked his mother with it,saying,Mother,I want to go home. Its hot. The mother said apologetically,Hes a good-natured boy. Today hes just hungry. Well wait till behenjis helicopter lands. Okay? she said, pointing the sky to the boy.
The crowd suddenly erupted into loud cheers and pointed at the sky as the distant sound of a helicopter was heard.
Hundred kilometers away, near the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida, preparations were going on for another major rally. Akhilesh Yadav of Samajwadi Party was going to make an appearance and all was functioning smoothly.
This rally, however, was smaller and more organised. The crowd of 1,000-odd people was easy to manage for local volunteers.
