Taking a lenient view, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena relaxed the prescribed criterion of physical standards and granted approval for the appointment of two dependents for compassionate appointment in the Delhi Police.

The applications of Muskan Rathore and Gopesh Meena had been rejected by the force as their height fell short by a marginal 0.5 cm and 0.4 cm, respectively. Saxena, however, exercising special power under the Delhi Police (Appointment and Recruitment) Rules, 1980, relaxed the prescribed criterion and has issued directions for the issuance of appointment letters to them

Rathore had made an application for compassionate appointment as a constable following the death of her father, head constable Raj Narayan Singh, on October 10, 2019. But her application was rejected since her height was 151.5 cm against the prescribed height of 152 cm.

Similarly, Meena, the son of late constable Pooran Singh, who had applied for a compassionate appointment on August 26, 2020, was also found to be 164.6 cm as against the prescribed height of 165 cm.

According to Raj Niwas officials, Saxena noted that Meena had an unmarried younger sister, brother, and a widowed mother while Rathore also had the responsibility of a younger brother and his widowed mother.

“In light of the penury conditions and liabilities/responsibilities of the families, both the cases appear to be fit for appointment on compassionate grounds in Delhi Police, in relaxation of the prescribed criterion of physical standards, i.e. height,” Saxena noted while overruling the Delhi Police in the matter.

In February this year, Saxena had granted approval for the appointment of three beneficiaries as constables in the Delhi Police by relaxing the criterion of age by 5 to 6 months.
