Two journalists working with the Caravan magazine have been asked to join the investigation in connection with an FIR registered against them by a resident of Northeast Delhi in 2020.
On August 11, 2020, a complaint was filed by the magazine’s reporter Prabhjit Singh (50), alleging that he and two of his colleagues, including a woman, were assaulted by unknown persons when they were reporting about communal riots that broke out in Northeast Delhi in February that year.
According to the police, another complaint was received the same day – against the three Caravan staffers – by a woman, accusing them of molestation, misbehavior and beating her husband, apart from inciting religious enmity.
According to the police, the woman’s statement was recorded under section 164 CrPC in Karkardooma court, during which she reiterated her allegations. Police say the three have been booked under IPC sections 323 (causing hurt), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion), and 34 (common intention).
The magazine, in a statement Saturday, however, alleged its reporters were “subjected to communal slurs and threatened with murder” and “the woman reporter was sexually harassed”. The magazine alleged they had not received a copy of the FIR against its reporters.
According to the police, Singh was served a notice on June 3 this year, asking him to join the investigation on June 7, which he did. The woman reporter, police said, was also served a notice, and is yet to join the investigation. “Fresh efforts are being made to have her join the investigation as soon as possible. Further investigation is in progress,” said DCP, Northeast, Joy Tirkey.
