Tortured for dowry,23-yr-old hangs self

The police said the deceased committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling. “We received a call around 6.30 pm. She was taken to DDU Hospital,where she was declared dead on arrival,” Sharad Aggarwal,DCP (West),said.

An SDM inquiry was ordered and it was on its recommendations that the police lodged the relevant case and arrested the two accused.

The police said the couple had known each other for a long time and were married in May this year.

Amarjeet Kaur,Preeti’s mother,alleged her daughter had often complained of harassment for dowry by her in-laws. “But I failed to take them seriously. I would even ask her to adjust to the new house,thinking that everything would become normal after a couple of months. I was wrong,” Kaur said.

The police are also looking into Sarabjeet’s work and why he left the call centre where he used to work; he had given up his job a few days ago.

They said they would only find the exact reason for the death after they receive the postmortem report.
