35-year-old Ram Phool set off to work as usual on Wednesday morning at a house near Delhi University’s South Campus area where he worked as a labourer. Around 1 pm, he heard his colleagues talking about a child who was killed in a hit-and-run under the Moti Bagh flyover — where he and his family of seven also lived — but didn’t pay them much heed. It was a while later that a worker told him that the child was his two-year-old daughter, Anita. The father rushed to the spot and took his daughter to Safdarjung Hospital, where she died of injuries.
Police said the toddler had gone with her aunt, Lakshmi, to buy milk. On their way back, her aunt was carrying Anita in her arms when a car hit them from behind. They fell on the road and the child sustained severe injuries to her head, said police.
Police said it took 10-15 minutes for the child to be rushed to the Hospital by her family, where she died during treatment. Doctors said she had suffered multiple injuries to her head and lost a lot of blood. Police said they have lodged a case and are looking at CCTVs around the flyover and the residential area to identify the offending vehicle and arrest its driver.
Demanding that the accused be arrested, the father said: “… she was lying there for more than 15 minutes. We want the accused to be at least identified… I have lost my two-year-old daughter…”
“We have been living under the flyover for years… it’s risky as motorists often speed past… but we don’t have a home… I get some jobs but don’t have a steady income. I had left Anita with her aunt and went to work. I don’t even have a phone. After 1 pm, I heard my friends talking about a child who was mowed down near the flyover… it was later they told me my daughter was involved in a road accident,” he added.
Her aunt said the accused didn’t stop and fled the spot. “The accused hit us and we fell in different directions. I suffered minor injuries and when I got up, I saw my niece lying on the other side of the road with her head crushed. I got scared and rushed to help her. I don’t know if the accused hit her or dragged her before fleeing…,” she alleged.
